چکیده

The fluorescent iron Kα emission line profile provides an excellent probe of the innermost regions of active galactic nuclei. Fe XXV and Fe XXVI in diffuse plasma above the accretion disc can affect the X-ray spectrum by iron Kα resonant absorption. This in turn can influence the interpretation of the data and the estimation of the accretion disc and black hole parameters. We embark on a fully relativistic computation of this effect and calculate the iron line profile in the framework of a specific model in which rotating, highly ionized and resonantly-absorbing plasma occurs close to the black hole. This can explain the features seen in the iron Kα line profile recently obtained by Nandra et al. (1999) for the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516. We show that the redshift of this feature can be mainly gravitational in origin and accounted for without the need to invoke fast accretion of matter onto the black hole. New X-ray satellites such as XMM, ASTRO-E and Chandra provide excellent opportunities to test the model against high quality observational data.

Relativistic emission lines from accreting black holes The effect of disk truncation on line profiles

Relativistic emission lines generated by thin accretion disks around rotating black holes are an important diagnostic tool for testing gravity near the horizon. The iron K–line is of special importance for the interpretation of the X–ray emission of Seyfert galaxies, quasars and galactic X–ray binary systems. A generalized kinematic model is presented which includes radial drifts and non–Kepler...

Strong gravity effects: X-ray spectra, variability and polarimetry

Accreting black holes often show iron line emission in their X-ray spectra. When this line emission is very broad or variable then it is likely to originate from close to the black hole. The theory and observations of such broad and variable iron lines are briefly reviewed here. In order for a clear broad line to be found, one or more of the following have to occur: high iron abundance, dense d...

Iron fluorescence from within the innermost stable orbit of black hole accretion disks

The fluorescent iron Kα line is a powerful observational probe of the inner regions of black holes accretion disks. Previous studies have assumed that only material outside the radius of marginal stability (r = 6m for a Schwarzschild hole) can contribute to the observed line emission. Here, we show that fluorescence by material inside the radius of marginal stability, which is in the process of...

The X-ray spectra of accreting Kerr black holes

The relativistic broad iron lines seen in the X-ray spectra of several active galaxies and Galactic black hole systems are reviewed. Most such objects require emission from within the innermost stable orbit of a non-rotating black hole, suggesting that the black holes are rapidly spinning Kerr holes. We discuss the soft excess, the broad iron line and the Compton hump characteristic of reflecti...

Iron K Line Emission in Agn: Observations

Iron Kα lines are key diagnostics of the central regions of AGN. Their profiles indicate that they are formed deep in the potential well of the central black hole, where extreme broadening and red shift occur. The profiles are most easily reproducible in an accretion disk: the lack of significant emission blue-ward of the rest energy is difficult produce in other geometries. In one source an ap...
